At Thoraxklinik people with lung cancer are treated by a multidisciplinary
team of experts. We offer consultations, diagnosis and treatment of all
diseases (e.g. lung emphysema, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD),
fibrosis of the lung and malignant lung diseases including lung cancer,
pleural mesothelioma and lung metastases).
We are an academic teaching hospital of the University of Heidelberg. Our
departments of Thoracic Surgery and Medical Oncology are integrated into
the Heidelberg University Clinics. The Thoraxklinik is partner of the
National Cancer Center that is located in Heidelberg.
Around 5,000 people are admitted annually as in-patients and about the
same number of patients are addittionally treated as out-patients. With
our wide spectrum of quality health care we are holding a leading position
not only in Germany but also in Europe. The surgeons of the Thoraxklinik
have unequaled experience and knowledge about surgical removal in lung
cancer operations. For patients whose tumor are more advanced, a program
of chemotherapy before surgery appears to double or triple cure rate.
Another field of our activities ist the clinical research and development
of new strategies, particularly those combining sugery and radiotherapy or
chemotherapy as multi-modal concepts. Due to our clinical research our
patients have access to the newest approaches to treatment, which can
include participation in clinical trials.
